Dendê and Band

Workshop

The program offers a comprehensive arts-in-education experience that includes residency, lecture-demonstrations, workshops, and family programs. These activities are comprised of Afro-Brazilian percussion, dance, and martial arts programs that weave geography, social studies, history, and religion into the curriculum.

Afro-Brazilian Percussion

Students will learn a wide range of rhythms, including traditional Afro-Brazilian rhythms and popular rhythms from Afro-Brazilian percussion groups such as Timbalada, Olodum, and Ile Aiye.

Afro-Brazilian Dance

Students will learn a variety of dances, including samba, orixa dances, maculêlê, and capoeira

Workshops are available from one-time sessions to semester-long residencies. Residencies taught by the Artistic Director and master Afro-Brazilian percussionist Dendê Macêdo are currently offered in four public schools in Philadelphia: Woodrow Wilson Middle School, Lincoln High School, Farrell Elementary, and Carnell Elementary

Dendê and Band

There’s an emphasis on the ecstasy and grooves in this splendid album, on the estimable Ropeadope label, from the Brazilian percussionist, singer, and composer from Salvador de Bahia, Dendê Macêdo, who delivers rhythm and melody in spades.  – Mark Sampson, Sounds and Colours He absorbs music from all over the world, then infuses it with his own distinct energy and rhythmic swagger” – Rudy Greenberg, Relix Magazine

A percussionist, singer, composer, and teacher Dendé is a force of nature and a standard bearer for Brazilian roots music. His 2022 album Agô is a standout, entrancing start to finish. – Banning Eyre, Afropop Worlwide
Dendê is a percussionist, singer, composer, bandleader, teacher, and multi-instrumentalist. He’s been a professional musician since the age of 14, when he appeared in the frontline of Timbalada, Carlinhos Brown’s superstar percussion ensemble. Since 2001, he’s been splitting his time between the US and Bahia, working with his own ensembles.
His flagship group, Dendê & Band reflects the cross-section of his deep roots in traditions like samba de roda and Candomblé and his eclectic musical appetite for other global rhythms like rumba, afrobeat and mbalax. Over the past two decades, Dendê & Band have performed at the Glastonbury Festival in the UK, Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles; the KW Latinfest in Canada; the Penang World Music Festival in Malaysia; the Kalalu Festival in Saint Lucia, Summerdance and Old Town School in Chicago the Lincoln Center Atrium in NYC among many others.
